Fighter Lead-In Training (FLIT) Course

Fixed Wing

The overall aim of the Fighter Lead-In Training (FLIT) course is to provide pilots with the knowledge and experience required to transition to fast-jet operations and develop the foundational tactical skills required for modern fighter aviation. The programme combines academic instruction with practical flying and mission training designed to develop flying ability, situational awareness, tactical thinking, and initiative. The course content can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements while maintaining a structured progression toward advanced tactical proficiency.

Course Subjects

  • As an overview, the course will include at least the following subjects:
  • Fundamentals of fast-jet operations and aircraft systems relevant to high-performance aircraft.
  • Principles of advanced aircraft handling, energy management, and flight discipline in a fast-jet environment.
  • Situational awareness development, threat recognition, and decision-making in dynamic operational environments.
  • Fundamentals of tactical operations including mission planning, execution, and post-mission analysis.
  • Introduction to tactical manoeuvring, formation operations, and cooperative mission execution.
  • Operational considerations associated with tactical flight training, including safety awareness and mission effectiveness.

Training Using Fast-Jet Aircraft and Simulation

  • The training may be performed in a suitable jet training aircraft and/or simulator environment and should include at least the following subjects:
  • Preparation and planning for fast-jet flight operations including mission briefing and flight planning.
  • Aircraft handling techniques during normal flight operations including takeoff, climb, en-route manoeuvring, tactical manoeuvres, descent, and landing.
  • Introduction to tactical manoeuvring and operational scenarios designed to develop situational awareness and pilot decision-making.
  • Use of simulation to reinforce tactical concepts, mission planning, and operational procedures.
  • Structured mission execution supported by comprehensive briefing and debriefing processes to reinforce learning objectives.

Phase One

This phase is intended to provide pilots with the foundational knowledge and practical experience required for the transition to fast-jet aircraft. Training focuses on aircraft handling, systems familiarization, and the development of essential flying skills, while introducing basic tactical concepts that will support later phases of the course.

Phase Two

This phase builds upon the core flying skills developed in the initial phase and introduces pilots to a range of tactical operations. Training emphasizes the practical application of tactical concepts, mission planning, and coordinated execution of operational scenarios designed to strengthen situational awareness and tactical decision-making.

Phase Three

This phase further develops the pilots’ tactical capabilities through advanced mission scenarios that integrate the skills and knowledge acquired during earlier training. The focus is on applying tactical procedures in realistic operational environments, reinforcing mission planning, execution, and analysis in preparation for operational fighter duties.
